Uploading and organizing

Makers and series

How CraftKeep organizes designs by maker and series, turns your existing folders into that structure, and lets you rename labels safely.

Updated

CraftKeep launches soon. This guide describes how it works at launch.

Crafters tend to remember designs by who made them and which collection they came from. CraftKeep organizes your library the same way, so browsing feels familiar from the first day.

The structure

Your library has three levels above the files themselves:

Level What it means Example
Maker The designer, shop or studio A pattern designer you buy from
Series A collection, bundle or project from that maker A seasonal bundle or a quilt-along
Design package One design and all of its files A single fox design in every size and format

Inside My Library, makers and series behave like folders you already know. Open a maker to see their series, open a series to see its designs, and use the breadcrumbs to step back up.

The structure works the same for every craft. A maker might sell embroidery designs, SVG cut files, laser patterns, vinyl decals, 3D printing models, or a mix of all of them.

How your folders become makers and series

Many crafters already keep files in folders such as Maker / Series / Design. When you upload folders or a ZIP, CraftKeep reads those folder names and file names and suggests:

  • a maker for the top-level folder or the name found in the files
  • a series for the collection folder
  • a design package for each design

You can accept the suggestion in one step or correct it before it is saved. When CraftKeep is not sure, it asks you rather than guessing. There is never a required setup step: if your files are not in neat folders, upload them anyway and CraftKeep will still suggest a grouping.

CraftKeep also remembers the original folder path each file came from. That path stays searchable, so you can still find a design by the folder name you used years ago.

Aliases: one maker, many names

The same designer often appears under slightly different names, such as a full shop name in one download and an abbreviation in another. A maker in CraftKeep can have aliases, so all of those names point to the same maker. Searching for any alias finds the same designs. See Searching your library.

Renaming without touching your files

You can rename a maker, a series or a design package whenever you like. Renaming changes the label you see in CraftKeep. It does not move, rename or change the files stored inside. Your original files, original filenames and original folder paths all stay exactly as they were uploaded.

That means you can tidy up your library as often as you want without any risk to the designs themselves. Changes to package details are also kept in history, so you can go back if needed. See Recovering deleted files and versions.

Collections and favorites

Sometimes one design fits in more than one place, such as a holiday collection and a gift ideas list. Favorites and collections point to your existing design packages without copying them, so they do not use extra storage.
