Uploading files, folders and ZIP imports

Upload files, folders or a maker's ZIP by button or drag-and-drop. CraftKeep suggests how to group them and keeps your original files and names.

Updated

CraftKeep launches soon. This guide describes how it works at launch.

Getting your designs into CraftKeep is meant to feel as simple as dropping files into a folder. You do not need to create makers, series or tags first. Upload what you have and CraftKeep does the sorting work in the background.

Ways to upload

You can add designs in whichever way suits you:

  • Upload button: choose files or a whole folder from your device.
  • Drag and drop: drag files or folders from your computer straight into your library.
  • ZIP files: upload a maker's ZIP exactly as you downloaded it. There is no need to unzip it first.

You can mix crafts freely in one upload. An embroidery bundle, an SVG cut file set for vinyl, a laser DXF and an STL for your 3D printer can all arrive together.

While files upload you see progress for each one, then a processing status as CraftKeep prepares previews and search. You can keep browsing your library while this happens.

What happens to a ZIP

When you upload a ZIP, CraftKeep looks inside and lists everything it contains. A single ZIP from a maker often holds several designs, each with several formats, sizes, instructions and pictures. CraftKeep works out which files belong together and suggests a design package for each design, along with the maker and series where it can tell.

ZIP files are checked for safety before anything inside is used. Archives that are unsafe, such as ones built to overload a computer or to place files where they should not go, are rejected rather than imported.

Suggested grouping you control

CraftKeep reads folder names, file names and file details to suggest:

  • which maker the designs came from
  • which series or collection they belong to
  • which files make up each design package

For a simple upload you can accept the suggestion in one step. If something looks off, you can correct the grouping before it is saved. When CraftKeep is unsure, it asks you instead of guessing. It never silently merges designs together. Learn more in Makers and series.

Your originals stay exactly as they were

CraftKeep keeps every file exactly as you uploaded it, byte for byte. It also keeps the original filename and the folder path it came from. Nothing on your own computer is renamed or changed.

Standardized names for easier searching

Maker filenames vary a lot. To make your library tidy and searchable, CraftKeep also gives each file a standardized display name that follows one pattern:

DesignName_Variant_Role_Sequence.ext

For example, a file a maker called fx_bloom_57_v2.pes might also show as something like Fox_Bloom_5x7_Design.pes, while the instructions show as Fox_Bloom_Instructions.pdf. Parts that do not apply are left out.

The standardized name is added alongside the original, not instead of it. Search finds a design by either name, and when you export to a USB drive you can choose original or standardized names. See Searching your library and USB and machine export.

Duplicate files

If you upload a file that is exactly the same as one already in your library, CraftKeep can flag it for you. It never deletes anything on its own.

Storage

Uploads count toward your plan's storage. You can see your plan's storage on the pricing page and your current use in the app.
